Implants are titanium screws replacing the root of the tooth, which are implanted in the bone. Thanks to the properties of titanium, the implant integrates with the bone – through a process called osseointegration (the evolvement of bone tissue around the implant without the development of fiber tissue between the implant and the bone). By means of special elements (the so-called abutments), implants are fastened with prosthetic restorations such as crowns, bridges and dentures.
Thanks to implants we can reconstruct:
Implantology is a relatively new area of dentistry in Poland – its development was hampered by the previous regime. Worldwide, implants have been inserted for 40 years.
They were invented by Professor Brenemark, whose implants have been made by the Nobel Biocare company to date. Our clinic is an accredited surgery of this company.
An implant insertion procedure is carried out in local anesthesia. The dentist makes an opening with an appropriate diameter in the bone, where they insert an implant. The procedure is completely painless. What the patient feels could be compared to a slight discomfort experienced during a simple tooth extraction.
The time lapse between implantation and prosthetic work is from about 3 to 6 months (until the implant fully integrates with the bone).
At this stage the patient is provided with a temporary prosthetic restoration, which ensures esthetic and functional comfort.
The next stage is prosthetic work. It takes from one to two weeks (depending on the kind of prosthetic restoration).
Sometimes, it is possible to perform a prosthetic restoration on the day of implantation. However, whether this procedure is feasible is up to the dentist themselves, who needs to check a panoramic X-ray and the conditions in the oral cavity.
Nobel Biocare provides a 10-year warranty, which ensures that in case of an implant loss, the company will replace the implant free of charge and that the only inconvenience the patient will have to suffer is another implantation.
